Showing a Picture on the Folder Icon Print E-mail

folderwithpicture1.jpg Sometimes you see a picture on top of the yellow folder icon in Windows. The picture is used to indicate what is inside the folder. Windows chooses the picture for you, so it is not always the picture that you would like to see on that folder.

A quick way to get a picture of your choosing to appear on top of the folder icon is to select the picture that you would like and rename it folder.jpg. Make a copy of it first if you want to have a copy with the original name. Then move the picture with the folder.jpg name into any folder and your picture will appear on the top of the folder.

Another way to do this is to right-click on the folder, choose Properties, then choose the Customize tab. Click on Choose Picture. Find the picture you want, then click on Apply.

In order to see the picture on the folder you must place it inside another folder that uses the Thumbnails view. The My Pictures folder is set up by default with that view. So if you create the folder in the My Pictures folder (which is inside the My Documents folder), you will be able to see your picture on the top of the folder.
