HandBrake can convert between many different common file formats. Often you don't even have to know or understand anything about file formats. You simply choose from HandBrake's presets. For instance, if you want to show your video on an iPod, you just choose "iPod" and HandBrake will fill in the format, size, and aspect ratio for you.

Handbrake won't be able to work with files that are encrypted, but it is perfect for home videos and other videos that are not encrypted.

This program is free open-source software. As such it is not pretty, but it is very useable. Just look at the screen carefully and you should be able to determine how to use it. This program is available for both PC and Mac users.
