Term Definition
Tab

A mechanism for setting automatic stops or margins in order to line up text or items in columns. Also a key on the keyboard that moves the cursor or pointer to the next tab stop.

The tab function in a word processor works much like the tab function on a typewriter. Tab stops can be set in the ruler at the top of the page. When the tab key is pressed, the cursor will move to the next tab location. This allows the user to indent paragraphs and lists.  

 
TableA collection of data arranged in rows and columns. Tables are commonly used in database programs, spreadsheets and word processing programs.
 
Tape DriveAn internal or external computer drive which uses tape as the medium for reading and writing data. Since a tape must be accessed sequentially, tape drives are much slower than most other data-access methods.
 
TaskbarThe bar usually found at the bottom of a Windows screen.  The taskbar shows which software programs are open.  It also contains the Start button.
 
TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/InA set of protocols that defines the Internet. The TCP/IP protocol is used by every major computer operating system to access the Internet.
 
Technical SupportSupport that is given to the computer hardware or software user from the manufacturer of the equipment or developer of the software. This includes help in installing and using the products.

TechnophobiaA fear of technology.
 
TelematicsTelematics was originally the combination of telecommunications and computing, but the term has evolved to refer to computerized automobile systems. Popular telematic systems today are those like General Motors' OnStar that combines GPS satellite tracking and wireless communications for automatic roadside assistance and remote diagnostics. Telematics also includes in-vehicle applications such as traffic-information systems, collision avoidance features, and mobile communications. In the future, you can expect telematics to change the way we drive.
 
Template

A pattern that is used to create other like items. Templates establish the initial document setting and formats. A word processing program like Microsoft Word uses the “normal” template as the basis for all documents.  A user can modify the “normal” document, and/or may create other templates to use.

 
Temporary FileThese are files that are created by a program for their own use in performing calculations or storing information. Many different programs use temporary files. Internet browsers use temporary files to cache (store) copies of web pages so they can be loaded more quickly when needed again. Each program is to delete their own temporary files after use, but, for a variety of reasons, temporary files often are left on the hard disk. Over time these can accumulate and take up disk storage space. The Windows Disk Clean Up utility can be used to delete temporary files or they can be deleted manually.
 
Terabyte

 

1000 gigabytes. To give you an idea of how much a terabyte holds. Using a 6-megapixel camera at high resolution, a terabyte will hold about 285,700 digital photos. Based on 4 minutes per song and a 128 kbps bit rate, it will hold about 250,000 songs in MP3 format. A terabyte will hold about 440 hours of DVD quality video, and up to 120 hours of HD video.

 

 
Text Messaging (Texting)

Texting is sending short messages in the form of text. These messages are generally sent to and from cell phones. These messages are usually less than 160 characters. A special language with abbreviations and shortened text which has special meanings is often used in text messaging.

 
Thermal Dye Transfer PrinterA printer that transforms the ink into a gas which hardens on the page to produce high quality color images that look like photos. Also called dye sublimation printer.
 
Thermal Wax PrinterA Printer that uses colored wax, heated and melted onto the paper to produce colors.
 
ThreadA sequence of messages usually related to the same topic used in a message board.
 
TiVoA popular brand of digital video recorder that records television programming and stores it to a hard disk for later viewing. TiVo also has their own electronic programming guide and special recording options.
 
TonerThe type of ink used in laser printers and copy machines. It is a dry powder.
 
ToolbarA strip of icons in a software program that usually are located at the top of the screen.
 
TouchpadAn input device that consists of a small touch-sensitive pad. The user moves his or her finger across the pad to move the cursor on the screen.
 
Track BallAn input device used in place of a mouse which has a ball that is moved with the fingers to direct the movement of the cursor on the computer screen.
 
Track ChangesMost word processing programs have a feature called track changes. This allows any change made to a document to be shown and able to be accepted or rejected by another user. With this feature turned on, all users can keep track of the changes when two or more people are working on the same document.
 
TrackingIn word processing or desktop publishing, to adjust the space between the characters of type.
 
TrojanA Trojan is considered by most  to be a computer virus. It differs from other viruses in that it is a self contained program. Trojans do not infect other computer files like viruses do and they do not make copies of themselves as worms do, but they can be just as destructive.
 
TroubleshootTo systematically investigate a problem and find a solution.
 
TWAINIIs a software protocol and interface that coordinates communication between software programs and imaging devices like scanners and digital cameras. Although not an official acronym, it is known as “Technology Without An Interesting Name.”
 
Twitter

Twitter is a social networking website (www.twitter.com) that allows people to communicate what they are doing at any given time and to share that information with other people on the Twitter website. Twitter can also be accessed from a mobile phone so friends can stay in constant touch with each other.

 
TypefaceA collection of letters, numbers and symbols that have the same distinctive appearance.
