Interpolation

The mathematical process of adding and/or subtracting pixels to an image to make it larger or smaller. For digital cameras, interpolation is often used to take a small portion of the image and enlarge it to produce a digital zoom. The image is enlarged by examining each pixel and using complex mathematic calculations to determine the location and color of extra pixels that are added to make the image larger than the original.
