software/ezbackup.jpgThere are many available software programs but the true value of any program is its usefulness to the purchaser. Easy Backup provides a simple and quick way to backup important files that almost every computer owner uses everyday.

Computer users who want to back their e-mail program, Internet favorites, address book, checkbook program, and other everyday files face a job that can be somewhat complex. Knowing what files to backup, finding those files, and creating the backup medium can be difficult. Eazy Backup makes it a simple one-step process.

The program automatically finds the e-mail program(s) that you are using. It also finds any other program that it supports. For instance, I use Time & Chaos as my personal information manager and Easy Backup found that program on my computer and offered to back it up for me.   It backs up all the Internet Explorer information including cookies, favorites, offline Web folders, options settings, toolbar settings and history. It also backups the Windows address book and the My Documents folder.

The data can be backed up to any device on your computer or your network, so you can back up to another hard drive, a CD-R or CD-RW, or any network drive or device that you have access to.  Eazy Backup does require software that provides a direct write to the CD. In most computer systems this type of software is already installed. If you do not have such software installed, you will have to go through one extra step which is to create the backup on your hard drive and then copy it to the CD.

An uncluttered interface makes it easy to select the things that you would like to backup, and a convenient “Select All” button lets you backup everything shown on the screen. Restoring files from the Eazy Backup menu is as simple as deciding what you want to restore. The program knows how to restore the files to the proper locations. Although I didn’t try this feature, Eazy Backup can even restore the files to a different version of Windows which would be useful in transferring important data to a new computer.

This program also has some other useful features. A backup reminder can be set for as often as everyday and as infrequently as every fifteen days. An automatic scheduler can be set to backup at a certain day of the week or the month at a convenient time. Old backups can also be automatically purged which is very handy if you happen to back up your computer to another hard drive or another networked computer. You can also test backups to be assured of their reliability.

Eazy Backup works for many different e-mail programs as well as some of the more common information management programs. It supports   Outlook (97, 98, 2000, & 2002, Outlook Express (5, 5.5, & 6.0), Eudora (4.x & 5.x), Netscape 4.x, 6.0, IncrediMail, Nelson Organizer,   MSN 8, QuickBooks, Quicken, Microsoft Money, ACT,  AI RoboForm, Expensable, 4t Calendar Reminder MP3, and Time and Chaos. Other programs are being added so check their Web site for any program you don’t see listed here.

The Premier edition of Eazy Backup that I reviewed costs $49.95. Purchase that version if you want to back up some of the additional programs listed like Quicken, Money, Act, and Time and Chaos. If you just want to back up your email program, My Documents, Windows common files, and Internet Explorer settings, you can purchase one of their e-mail specific editions, like the Outlook Edition or Eudora Edition which range in price from $34.95 to $39.95.
