The Wait is Over — iPhone 5S and 5C Are Here

If you have been anxiously waiting for the new iPhones to be announced like I have, the wait is over. However, you may be a little disappointed, as I am.

Yesterday Apple announced two new iPhones. That also should have been exciting. It was not. The iPhone 5C (read that Cheap), will be $99 with a two-year contract. It is esentially an iPhone 5 with a plastic case. The bright new colors of yellow, pink, green, white, and blue are nice, but there is little in the hardware to make you want to buy it. Although the price is nice, right now there are several good Android phones that are free with a 2-year contract.

Apple has added plenty to the hardware specs of the new iPhone 5S. It will have:

  • 64-bit A7 processor – redesigned for 64-bit as well as the redesigned apps
  • 2x general purpose registers
  • 2x floating point registers
  • Over 1 billion transistors
  • Graphics 2x faster
  • M7 new sensor that can monitor data if you are running, walking, driving, new Nike app keeps track of steps and activity. Others coming soon

All will make the phone much faster with about the same battery life as the iPhone 5. I, personally, would have rather had longer battery life with the same amount of power. Come on now, have you even heard anyone complaining that their iPhone was too slow?

The biggest announcement was the finger print reader. It looks like Apple has done very well on the hardware, but many people will consider using a fingerprint reader versus swiping the screen are saying a code word to unlock the phone a real yawner.

Is there any reason to get a 5S? Yes. The camera should take much better pictures. While it has the same number of megapixels, it has a larger sensor which should produce a dramatic improvement. Also other camera improvements are:

  • Enhanced auto functions in the software, including better white balance, autofocus, etc
  • New flash with 2 LEDs one bright, one warm with 1,000 variations. This is a camera first!
  • Burst photo 20 photos in 2 seconds which the camera auto analyses the photos like Galaxy S4
  • Slow motion features
  • Automatic sensing of the ambient light ie florescent or sunset

Both will be available on September 20th. The new iOS 7 will be available on September 18th.
