Brother HL-2140 Laser Printer

For years I have been using a laser printer right next to my ink jet. Since the toner for a laser printer is much less expensive than the ink for an ink jet printer, this saves me quite a bit of money.

When I need to print in color, I use the ink jet. When black and white will suffice, I use this monochrome laser printer. My current laser printer is a Brother HL-2140 and I must say that I have been very happy with it.

Since both the ink jet and the laser printer hook up by USB, you can easily have both attached at the same time. You simply choose which one you want to print to.

The printer is very easy to setup. It is not net workable, but rather attached to your computer with a USB cable. It has good print speeds, up to 23 ppm. It also has a good resolution up to 2400 x 600 dpi. The print is very clear and easy-to-read. The input tray holds up to 250 sheets, so you don’t have to add paper as often as you do with some other printers.

This Brother has a toner-saver mode which can save you even more on consumables. It also has a single sheet feeder so you can easily print labels and slightly thicker paper. When printing 3-up checks, my demo unit left an imprint of first check on the 2nd and 3rd checks when using the sheet feeder, so for checks, I have to use the paper tray. It’s a slight inconvenience, but not a major problem.

The only other problem is that the toner light comes on way before the toner is actually depleted. There are, however, plenty of YouTube videos that will show you how to put a piece of tape over the toner cartridge sensors so you can get to use every last drop of toner. I  used this trick and it worked beautifully.

Although the estimated street price is $119, this printer is often featured for less. It’s one for which you will certainly want to shop around.

Summary:

This is a good printer for use when you don’t need color and don’t want to spend a fortune on ink. The cost per page for laser printers is inherently less than the cost for ink jets. So you can keep costs down by having a printer like this along side of your color ink jet.

The compact design, low profile, and small footprint allow this printer to fit most anywhere. It handles legal paper, card stock, and envelopes quite well, as long as you don’t mind feeding them in individually. Our only caveat was in printing three-up checks.

The Good:

  • Quality prints
  • Low price
  • Toner Saver mode
  • Low profile, small footprint
  • Good speed
  • Energy Star rating

The Bad:

  • Premature low toner warning
  • Expensive drum replacement
  • Trouble printing three-up checks
  • No USB cable included

You really make it seem so easy together with your presentation but I to find this topic to be actually something which I believe I might by no means understand. It seems too complicated and very huge for me. I’m taking a look ahead to your subsequent publish, I will try to get the dangle of it!
