The Little PC Book Windows XP Edition

Whether you are just curious about how computers work, considering a PC purchase, or just bought a Windows XP computer, this book will give you the basics. As a matter of fact, The Little PC Book Windows XP Edition also gives tips for computer users who are upgrading to Windows XP.

In this book, Larry Magid, a technology columnist and free-lance writer, subscribed to my Compu-KISS methodology. He explains everything in non-technical terminology. From where to buy a computer to explanations of how to create a small computer network, this book is brimming with information.

The book is divided into four parts: Getting Oriented, Working with Windows XP, Cool Things You Can Do with Your PC, and Exploring the Internet. There are 56 chapters. While that number may seem overwhelming, some of the “chapters” are only two or three pages long.  You won’t find extensive information on any given subject, but you will find an explanation of a large number of computer-related topics. There is basic information on computer hardware as well as Internet-related topics. You’ll learn about everything from ports and printers, to mouse pads and modems. In addition there is basic information on how to work in Windows XP.  You’ll learn how to move and copy files, create shortcuts, and maneuver through menus. The book answers some of the basic computer questions. What is a virus? How do I backup my data? Should I turn the computer off or leave it on?

The information in the book is extensive. Larry covers some topics that I haven’t seen in other books of this type, including information on PC User Groups and Microsoft.Net.

Yet, this book begs for an update. It lacks important information on some of the newest computer threats like spam, phishing scams and spyware. Information on where to download music and file-sharing services is outdated. Yet, it is a good book for any beginner searching for basic computer information.
