SideWinder E-mail
gadgets/sidewinder.jpgWhether you bought your cell phone for emergencies or for everyday calls, you want to be ready to make a call at any time. You need to be sure that you always have power for your cell phone available. That’s where the Sidewinder comes in. The Sidewinder is a compact source of emergency power that can help you make that important call even if your cell phone’s battery is short on power.

Sidewinder won’t ever run out of power since it is people powered. Pick up the small blue generator; flip out the arm and start winding. The mechanism both feels and sounds somewhat like a fishing reel. You may feel some resistance, but the crank is quite easy to turn. After a few cranks a small light on the SideWinder will illuminate its small built-in LED and it’s ready to also be used as a tiny flashlight (Good for finding your keys in the dark, but not strong enough to light a path.) Use the included short cable to hook your cell phone to the SideWinder and your cranking will generate power for the phone. About two minutes of cranking will give you approximately six minutes of talk time, and considerably more standby time. The handle can be turned in either direction accommodating both left and right-handed people.

The SideWinder measures approximately 2 x 1 ½ x 1 inch and weighs only 2.5 ounces. The crank folds in making it a very compact unit. It comes with a woven wrist strap, a two foot cable. The included small black case keeps the unit and cable handy in a pocket, car, briefcase, or handbag.

Since the SideWinder requires no electrical power, it is ideal for any situation that takes you away from a traditional power source. You can even talk and wind at the same time, although holding the cell phone and winding at the same time can be a test of your dexterity.

The SideWinder fits many different phones including Nokia, Audiovox, Kyocera, Motorola, Sony/Ericsson, LG, and Samsung. Just choose your specific type of cell phone so you get the proper cable for your phone.

The SideWinder provides a quick burst of power when you need it. It is best used when your cell phone indicates that its battery is running low. Although it can recharge a dead cell phone, it would take too much cranking to make this feat feasible.

In many ways, I consider the SideWinder a clever device. The SideWinder is made of heavy-duty plastic making it very solid and durable. Its small profile and light weight make it perfect for camping, boating, rock-climbing, and other outdoor sports. Of course, it is also an insurance policy for people like me who sometimes forget to charge their cell phones. At $24.95, it’s an insurance policy that you may want to consider.
