Show Me Microsoft Windows XP, Second Edition Print E-mail
books/showmewinxp.gifSome of us can read or listen to directions and then perform a given task. However many of us need to be shown what to do. The Show Me series for computer learning provides visual clues and demonstrations to aid us in the learning process. It’s the next best thing to having a computer tutor sit by your side.

I took a look at the Show Me Microsoft Windows XP Second Edition book. This book starts at the beginning and walks you through the different tasks and processes of Windows XP. The step-by-step approach is perfect for beginners but intermediate users will also find enough meat in the text to enhance their use of Windows XP.

This is not a book for dummies. Beginners will want to start at the front of the book and work their way through. Once the author shows you how to do something, he assumes that you’ve got it and that you will be able to perform the next task based on what you learned. I like this approach since it is how everyone learns to use the computer. You first learn the basics, then you go on to more advanced tasks. What you learn in one Windows program will be helpful to you in the next program you use. Learning the computer is a set of experiences that you build on. Although this book does not take a dummy approach, you have no need to worry; just about everyone will be able to easily follow along.

The 494-page book is quite comprehensive. It starts with how to start Windows XP and instructions for using a mouse and goes on to cover more involved tasks such as how to send and receive faxes through Windows and how to add a second monitor. The book also covers instructions for the mini-programs that come with Windows. It explains how to surf the Internet using Internet Explorer, create a movie using Movie Maker, work with Outlook Express e-mail, and use Windows Media Player to work with audio files. Web discussions and video conferencing are also covered.

Every task is shown visually. There are screen shots with call-outs as well as step-by-step instructions for each task. The “Did You Know?” boxes are filled with tips that many people overlook.

I was pleased to see the chapter on Maintaining Security, which covers everything from making folders private to protecting Internet privacy. It also includes information on the additional security that Microsoft provided with the release of Service Pack 2.  The chapter on Maintaining your Computer includes important information like how to update Windows. There is also information on understanding and setting up a home network, and on the all-important subject of backing up your computer.

Whether you are new to Windows XP or you just want to learn all you can about how it works, this book will serve you well.
