QuickLook Portable Magnifier
vision/quicklookmagnifier.jpgAging eyes sometimes need a little help and at other times need more than a little help. The QuickLook Portable Magnifier was created to give your eyes a needed boost wherever you go. Magnifiers have been around for a long, long time. They are available in everything from necklaces to floor lamps. The QuickLook is a cutting edge magnifier. As such, it is pricey, but amazing.

The QuickLook is the first generation of handheld digital magnifying technology. This is the technology that was previously available only in large, costly personal reading systems. At 6 ½” by 3 ¾” by 1” and weighing about 10 ounces, QuickLook is portable. It is conveniently carried and used whenever the need occurs. You can use it in a store to read labels, as well as in a restaurant to read menus. It comes with its own carrying case with integrated belt loop and also has a wrist/neck strap.

The thing that differentiates this magnifier from others is the built-in monitor and 4” color LCD display. It magnifies up to 6X, but because of the clarity and brightness of the lighted screen, the 6X magnification seems much stronger. The large reading screen also makes the magnification seem better than regular magnifiers. A touch of a button changes the QuickLook display to a black and white or a reverse image. There are also six levels of brightness that can be accessed by pressing a button on the side of the magnifier.

The QuickLook is sturdy and the sides are notched making it easy to hold. The device is turned on by simply rotating the integral camera. You can vary the magnification by changing the viewing angle. It can be laid directly on the text for reading a newspaper or book, or it can be held upright for viewing other items. It can be used with the screen in either vertical or horizontal position.

In my testing, the rechargeable battery lasted between one and one-half to almost two hours depending on use and brightness level. The battery can be recharged by using the included cable to plug the unit into any wall outlet.

At $795 the QuickLook isn’t cheap, but it is stronger than most 2-3X handheld magnifiers and is cheaper than personal reading systems that can often cost thousands of dollars.  Comparable magnifiers are in the same price range.
