 With digital photography catching on, it is not surprising that many people are looking for ways to edit, share, and organize their photos. What is surprising is that a robust program that can accomplish all of these tasks is not only available, but it is FREE.
Google’s Picasa photo editing software is not only an excellent program, but it is free. You can download it from the Web. Installation is easy. Once the program is installed it will automatically scan your hard disk to find all the pictures. After it has completed that task you can easily add captions to the pictures, give them ratings, move them, edit them, or copy them.
The organizational features of the program are excellent. You can even attach keywords to the photos. So later you can search for a picture in many different ways. You can search for every picture of Aunt Edna, for every photo taken in August, or you can look at every picture in a certain folder. You can also use Picasa’s nifty Timeline feature to scroll through your photos in chronological order.
Picasa is also an easy to use photo editing program. You can easily remove red eye, adjust contrast, crop, straighten, and rotate photos. You can apply different effects like sepia, black and white, and soft focus. There is even a Fill Light tool that will make the background lighter and a Shadows filter that will darken the background.
Besides editing and organizing your photos, Picasa will also help you burn your photos to a disk for safe keeping or email them to friends. It will create collages and slideshows and will also help you print your photos in all the standard sizes. The free Picasa Album will let you post your photos on the Web to share with friends and even this feature is free.
