As you may know, using computers can cause eyestrain in a person with normal vision. Computers, however, are a greater menace to people with poor eyesight as well as those with aging eyes. Time starts to weaken our eyes around the age of 40, when most folks become bifocal wearers. Aging eyes are also susceptible to many age-related diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration.
Many of you know that I have always been interested in helping those with vision problems, especially as they relate to the computer. So I was pleased to find some new eye glasses in my mail to review – one pair of special melanin sunglasses and one pair of melanin glasses for use both at the computer and for night driving. The melanin sunglasses looked just like regular sunglasses, but the lenses of the melanin computer/night driving glasses had an intriguing yellow tint. At the time, I didn’t even know what melanin was. Later as I left the office that bright sunny day, I grabbed the sunglasses on my way to a luncheon date. Before driving more than a few miles, I found myself saying, “These are the best sunglasses that I’ve ever worn!” Not only did they completely eliminate squinting, but colors were also undistorted and pleasantly discernable. I tried the other pair of melanin glasses designed for computer work as well as for night driving. In both instances, these glasses reduced glare and made my eyes feel more relaxed. So began my quest to find out about melanin and why these glasses were so different.
I talked with Dr. James Gallas, the creator of the glasses. I found out that melanin is a pigment that occurs naturally in your body. It gives your skin and hair its color, and, in the eyes, it protects against damaging light rays. Jim explained, “Melanin absorbs light smoothly over a broad spectral range. It absorbs the higher energy light more strongly than the lower energy light. So it absorbs Ultra Violet more than blue, and the blue more than green - and so on. In this way melanin provides protection to the lens of the eye against UV, thereby decreasing the risks of cataracts. It provides near optimum protection to the retina by filtering the different colors in proportion to their ability to damage the tissue of the retina, thereby reducing the risk of macular degeneration. Because the blue light is reduced, so is the glare, and vision is thus enhanced. However, blue light is not eliminated so that color balance is maintained.”
We lose melanin in the eye as we age. By age fifty about 25% of our melanin is lost. Many believe that melanin glasses provide a way to compensate for lost melanin. A report that I read during my investigation of melanin stated that people with more eye melanin have less occurrence of macular degeneration; people with less eye melanin have greater occurrence of macular degeneration.
According to the National Eye Institute of the National Institute of Health, at least 1.7 million Americans have impaired vision due to age-related macular degeneration. As our population ages in the next thirty years, that number is expected to triple. These statistics led me to talk with Mr. Tom Perski, founder and former director of the Macular Degeneration International organization whose goal is to provide information and support for people with macular degeneration. Tom, who himself suffers from MD, is a firm believer in melanin glasses. Not only does he consider the glasses indispensable, but he also recommends them to all the members of his group.
The word indispensable impressed me, because that is exactly how I would have described the glasses after using them. They are indispensable. My experience is that everyone who tries them loves them. The original melanin sunglasses went home with my daughter, who said she couldn’t live without them. I then ordered another pair of non-prescription Melanin sunglasses. I also ordered a pair of prescription sunglasses and prescription computer glasses. The cost of these was comparable to non-Melanin prescription glasses. The extra protection for my eyes seemed well worth the cost.
If you use the computer a lot or just want to protect your vision, you may want to investigate these glasses.
