More and more people are now using their laptop computers as their everyday desktop units to save both money and space. Of course you can use a portable computer on your lap, but when you need to spread out those financial papers and jot down notes while working on the computer, you will want to set the laptop on a more stable pedestal. Yet, simply using a laptop on a desk or table is certain to result in a pain in the neck, arm, and/or wrist, since everything about the laptop seems to be poorly positioned for desktop use.
The keyboard on a laptop is too cramped for constant use and the pointer or touchpad is too awkward. You will want to add a full-sized keyboard and mouse. Remember, if at all possible you will want the keyboard and mouse to be slightly lower than the standard desktop. A pull-out keyboard drawer will put them at the proper level to relieve the stress that may otherwise be put on your wrists.
The small screen on a laptop that rests on a desk is usually too low and, with constant use, it will give you a real pain in the neck. There are two options to solve this problem. You can add an expensive external monitor, or you can purchase a stand to get the monitor up to the proper level. There are many different laptops stands of various shapes and sizes. One that I find to be an elegant solution is the Lapvantage. The Lapvantage has a swivel dome base and adjustable arm that gets your monitor to the proper height, while making your laptop look good at the same time.
The Lapvantage is known as “The Ergonomic Laptop Stand”. An anodized aluminum arm lets you adjust the height. The entire unit can swivel the laptop 360 degrees. The included silicone feet help dissipate heat from the bottom of the laptop. Cord clips are included to help control the cord clutter. The stand itself looks like a dome or a half bowling ball, similar to the design of the flat panel iMac computer. It is good looking and provides a nice small footprint. The Lapvantage is made of sturdy plastic and comes in black, grey, and white to complement PCs and Macs alike.
The Lapvantage is made to be used with an external keyboard and mouse. The keyboard fits snugly under the edge of the stand, making it the perfect unit for any student or computer-user that is working in a small space. If you want to use your laptop as a desktop replacement, the Lapvantage is a cost effective way to create an ergonomically correct work area for using your laptop. Plus, it’s classy-looking, as well.
