gadgets/fingerweights.jpgFingerWeights: The idea is simple and the implementation elegant. You’ve heard of weight training, but we often think of weights for toning the shoulders, arms, legs, and other large areas of the body. Why not use the same technique for the all important little areas of the body like the hands and fingers?

FingerWeights are unpretentious little weights that slip onto each finger. They can be used to strengthen the hands and fingers. There are three different applications where FingerWeights can be useful: in Sports, Music, and for Health Related issues.

I tried the FingerWeights for carpal tunnel syndrome relief and arthritis pain management. They can also be used to condition and exercise the fingers and hands to keep them strong and help fend off debilitating problems like carpel tunnel syndrome and arthritis. The FingerWeights themselves are made entirely of flexible plastic that is non-latex and FDA approved. The bottom portion grips your fingers while the upper part holds three 5 gram weights. Two of the weights are removable, so you can start off with only 5 grams and increase the weight as you build finger strength. The health model set is made of colored plastic with stainless steel weights.

Amazingly, the FingerWeights did not feel extremely bulky even on my small-sized hands. It also surprised me that I could wear the weights while typing on the computer without any interference. And that is one of the exercises for computer users, to wear these weights while typing. The small manual that comes with the weights gives pictures and repetitions for other simple exercises, as well.  Since FingerWeights are non-magnetic, they are safe to wear when working on the computer. Others in my office offered comments on my new “finger jewelry”, and the fact that my fingers looked somewhat “robotic”.

Specific uses, the amount of use, and the exercises needed are determined by the reason that you are using the weights. For instance, musicians, arthritis sufferers, and sports and fitness participants will have different programs. All are spelled out in the included manual.

When used for sports, FingerWeights are said to improve ball handling skills, shooting range, and free throw percentage. For musicians they improve dexterity, increase endurance, increase velocity, and improve control. Certainly they can also be useful for computer users and those with dexterity problems. I will use them to build up my finger strength and hopefully to prevent arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome. They are guaranteed to improve strength, flexibility, dexterity, and endurance. FingerWeights is a simple solution, an elegant implementation.
