For many of us, having cruise control is a must when driving long distances. Now GM has announced a type of advanced cruise control that can make those long trips even more enjoyable. The same radar technology the police have used for years to measure your speed can now be incorporated into the front of the car to measure the distance between you and the car in front of you.

This new technology, which is also called Adaptive Cruise Control, allows the use of the cruise control in light to moderate traffic. The system adapts automatically without user intervention. When the Adaptive Cruise Control perceives a slower moving vehicle in front, it will reduce the auto’s speed by closing the throttle and/or apply brake pressure to decelerate the car.
Auto manufacturers stress that advanced cruise control does not drive the car for you, and it's not meant to be used in heavy traffic. But, for long trips, it's a convenience that allows you to focus more on your driving.
