If you are caring for a friend or family member in your home, you are not alone. According to the National Family Caregivers Association (NFCA), more than 50 million people provide care for others. The majority of this care is provided in the home of the caregiver. I know from experience that often, changes must be made in the home to accommodate the loved one in need. When my ailing father-in-law came to live with us, doorways had to be enlarged, grab bars installed, and lighting changed. As a caregiver you want to accommodate your loved one, while keeping your living space comfortable for you and your family as well.
Creating a comfortable and functional environment can be challenging, but now there is help. Philips Electronics and Stephen Saint-Onge, a nationally known home designer, have joined with NFCA to produce a Web site filled with ideas for caregivers.
The Designing at Home Web site has a caregiver suite makeover, a video makeover journal, and several accounts on the challenges of being a caregiver. They emphasize technology resources that you can use to make functional changes. Tips and resources include before and after photos, “how to” articles and design pointers. The subject areas range from health care equipment to lighting and accessories. This Web site will give you ideas on what to do and how to do it.
The Web site stresses safety and accessibility, but it also covers the addition of personal touches to make everyone feel comfortable. It even gives tips on the proper paint colors. If you are caregiver, you will want to check it out!
