Dell Axim X5

by Sandy Berger

We all owe a big thank you to Dell computers. Their introduction of the value priced Axim Pocket PC – the first to debut at under $200 -- forced the competition to lower their prices, making PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) more affordable for all of us. But Dell didn’t just introduce a cheaper handheld computer; they created a value-packed, value-priced piece of equipment.

The screen is large and clear with bright colors and easy readability. The unit is responsive, and has all the features of other Pocket PCs including voice recording, audio play back, Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, calendar, and contacts. The Axim comes in two versions, the basic model has a 300-MHz XScale chip, 32MB of SDRAM, 32MB of Flash ROM, and a sync cable for $199, after rebate. The Axim Advanced has 64MB of SDRAM, 48MB of Flash ROM, and adds a cradle for $299, after rebate.

Dell paid attention to detail in the Axim. The cradle is well-designed. A cool looking neon-blue Dell logo illuminates on the cradle when the Axim is inserted. The cradle also has a place to store and recharge an extra battery pack, which is useful for traveling. The Axim has two expansion slots, a CompactFlash slot on top and an SD slot on the side. The navigation pad on the front is large and easy to operate as is the jog dial on the side. Click over to the Dell Web site and choose the Dell Axim X5 Flash Tour to get a 360 degree look at the Axim and its features.

The biggest complaint about the Axim has been the size. It is 3.25 inches across and 0.6 inches thick, making it one of the largest PDAs around.  But while the size may be a turn-off for some, it will be an advantage for others. The Axim is not straight and sleek like most other PDAs. Instead its sides are curved and rubberized. The size and material plus the contour make the unit fit comfortably in the hand. Those with large hands and/or dexterity problems may find the Axim a very good fit for them.    Combined with the large, clear screen, the Axim will be a good choice for many older tech savvy users. Combined with the low price, this PDA will be a good choice for any who are not focused only on slim and trim.
