End of analog cell phone service

While my wife and I both have cell phones, we haven't jumped on the always-available bandwagon. So our cell phones are only turned on when we're making calls or expecting them. So we've stayed with our no-frills handsets that are only telephones, but can't do any tricks like taking pictures or videos, sending/receiving text messages, watching TV, browsing the Web, etc. And that's just fine, when all we want to do is talk! Best of all, we've preserved our bargain analog service legacy calling plan of $30/month total for both phones.

But all good things come to an end; we just received a letter from Verizon that (as we've known for a long time) analog cell phone service will end next february. So we're shopping for new handsets and researching calling plans. And we'll surely enjoy features of digital cell phone service and new/improved handsets.

For others who are still enjoying bargain analog service, this is your wake-up call: Start researching handsets and calling plans NOW so you're not rushed next year.

If you're not sure whether you have analog service -- If you purchased a handset within the last few years, you almost certainly have digital service. If your handset can do anything beyond make phone calls, you're likely on a digital calling plan. If you're not sure, check with your cell phone carrier.
