What type of screen do you have? Is it a flat panel LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen or is it one of the old fashioned large CRT (cathode Ray Tube) screens that are humongous in size and very heavy?..... To be honest, if it's the old CRT screen then it is really time to get rid of it and get an LCD screen which will save you a lot of electricity expense on your utility bill and will be much cooler.... If you do a lot of graphics work, the old CRT did give a much sharper picture for you to look at, but besides that there isn't really a lot of nice things to say about them.... And they must be disposed of at an E-waste facility because of the chemicals and metals that are used inside them. Just can't be tossed in the trash..... This time of year is a grea time to be looiking for a new screen with all the holiday sales taking place as they are really quite inexpensive now.....

If a new one is out of the question, then you might want to do some investigative steps to see what's up.... unplug your monitor and wipe off the connection areas and then make sure when you plug everything back in that the connections are snug and tight.... sometimes, just reconnecting can scratch out some of the electrolysis that occurs around electrical connections and give you a better connection. If comfortable doing so, take the case off the body of the computer box and check your cards and connections to the mother board to be sure you are getting good connections (of course, have the power turned off, puter unplugged, and be sure you hold on to the metal frame of the box so youground yourself and don't send a static shock into the machine and fry some electrical components...then you would need a new computer. Static sounds like you describe sound as though there is some bad connections, dirty connections, or that the older components inside the monitor are just wearing out..... Getting a new flat panel LCD screen that connects via USB sounds like the best thing to do....

Let us know what you come up with after doing some tinkering and snooping about inside the box.....

Sure enough, I reread your initial posting and there, big as life, was the word laptop you mentioned tapping on... my mind saw monitor or screen i guess... duhhhhhhh

The other info pertains to a desktop monitor...sorry.... With a laptop, the screen is usually the first major repair that will be needed and it's generally recommended to get an extended warranty that will give longer coverage on the screen for a laptop if at all possible. The cracking/scratchy noise sounds like a short of some king and you can look around the hinges where the screen attached to the body of the laptop to be sure nothing is exposed or loose, wire wise. The displays have a backlight that can go out and possibly can crackle, but more likely the picture will get darker and darker until you nearly can't see a thing. Screens can be replaced, but it is advisable to have a repair shop do the replacement so they can get inside the body of the computer and do all the un and re-soldering of wires, etc.

Would be great if you still had warranty coverage, but don't know how old the laptop is. Screen replacements can generally run you a couple of hundred dollars, so certainly not a cheap repair.
Best wishes and apologies for not being attentive to you saying it was a laptop computer....will just have to lay it off to a senior moment on my part for missing the important detail.... Grin
