Will Ubuntu of Linux and Windows Vista of Microsoft

Mine is an Acer Extensa Laptop with Windows Vista Home Basic OS - - -
I wish to try out the Open Source Ubuntu of Linux - - -
Linux people send ''free'' CD on request, to install the Ubuntu OS - - -
Ubuntu people say in their website that no harm will be done if Ubuntu is installed in a PC that has Windows as default OS - - -
But some Info Tech people discourage me from trying Ubuntu saying such installation might complicate matters for me as Ubuntu or any of Linux products are meant only for Computer experts and NOT for layman like me.
Could you please tell me whether my curioity to try Ubuntu would kill me.

No need to go out and purchase a burial plot or make any funeral arrangements.... Just partition your hard drive and install ubuntu on that new partition as you can't have two operating systems on the same partition of the HDD.... and have fun experimenting and trying out the operating system..... tons of folks do just that and have a ball.. Those same folks probably said not to try bike riding or driving and to just stick with walking... knowledge and expertise comes from trying, not hiding or running away from something.. computers are supposed to be fun and enjoyable... if not, then time to take up gardening....

Am old but new to computer --- pls tell me how to partition HDD and install Ubuntu or site from where I could get necy info.

Bigtoe, need a little clarification b4 accepting ''Don't get involved in Online Advertisements'', though appreciate your concern for an old man --- My sense of curiosity compels me to try new ones --- Would Google Newsletter suffice to try my hand at newsletter b4 venturing to Mail Chimp --- Wonder if you were warning me of any pit falls in online ads.  Am I a bother and going beyond my legitimate line of enquiry please.

To clarify, I meant that I am not involved with those advertisings...... The suggestion for you using Google search was to give you the chance to see the findings that I found about those programs and what they are used for.....

Really, one of the joys of using these contraptions is our ability to go onto the Internet and do searches on different subject matters as it is a really great way for us to learn new things..... keeps our "seasoned" minds active and gives us the fun of learning new things - and the medical benefits are abundant, from preventing or slowing Alzheimer disease to preventing depression and a host of other benefits to our physical and psychological beings.....

Curiosity is outstanding, but as a suggestion, you might consider learning and trying out one thing at a time..... perhaps install and learn the Linux open source operating systems, and once that is learned and you're comfortable, then progressing on to a newsletter, or trying to earn money through Internet advertising.... the horizon is unlimited, whether 8 or 80.....But, as with learning anything, we need to take it one step at a time - unless you are a genius with an Einstein mind, and then you can "multi-task learn" new things..... LOL....  .

The ones that make money in online advertising are the ones who sell products and programs to those who are told they can get rich doing online advertising if they will just buy and use these miracle programs/products.... My suggestion would be to do a lot of Googling and searching so you can have a comfortable understanding what you would be getting into, and then you can decide if that is where you want to go..... If it was really so prosperous, would the unemployment levels and the poverty levels be what they are in this country if one only had to get on the computer and watch the money roll in... ...

Not a bother at all, just suggesting that things would likely be clearer if you did the Google search and not have to depend on someone here doing the search, and giving you our interpretation of what we read.... things can get distorted a bit in the translation at times...
