Microsoft Free SyncToy Backup Program Print E-mail
Written by Sandy Berger
harddrive.jpgIf you back up your files by copying them manually, you are doing it the hard way. This free Microsoft program will let you keep your backup copies automatically in synch with the files on your hard drive that you want to back up. You simply download and install the free program and set the parameters. Then every time you add a new document or make a change to a file, it will automatically be added to or changed on your backup drive. This works best with external hard drives. It allows you to backup all types of files including digital photos, email, and word processing documents.

The program is available for free at the Microsoft Download Center. Because Microsoft provides the program at no cost, there is no technical support available. However , you can usually install the program with the default settings and have it perform very well.

Tthere is an active online support group where you can learn more about the program and get any questions answered. SyncToy works with Windows XP and Windows Vista.
