Don't pay for a bloated antivirus program and whatever you do, don't fall for any antivirus program that is promoted by email or by a popup on your screen. Instead, try avast!, which is an anti-virus program that can be downloaded at the avast! Website. It is completely free for non-commercial and home users. I like it not only because it is good, but because they don't try to trick you into buying anything.
There is a also an avast! Professional Version, which you have to pay for. However there is a 60-day free trial on this version. The Pro Version has a boot-up scanner, so if you are already infected you may be able to install Avast and during the installation put a check mark in front of perform boot scan. Then when you restart your computer it will scan for viruses and remove them before Windows starts. You should be aware, however, that once you are infected, some of the viruses are smart enough to not allow any antivirus program to be installed.
Also, please note: You should run only one antivirus program at a time. So if you want to use Avast, but you already have an antivirus program installed, you should uninstall that program before you install Avast or any new antivirus program. If have a trial version of Norton, McAfee, or some other antivirus program, when the trial period is over, they will try to get you to pay for the full version. If you don't want to pay, just uninstall that program and then install the free version of avast! .
