Recalls are commonplace occurrences in the electronics world, but if you own an Xbox, this one should grab your attention. Microsoft is replacing 14 million Xbox power cords. These cords are not only a potential hazard; there have been 30 reports of burned hands and/or damaged property. The recall affects about 70 percent of the approximately 20 million game consoles sold.
Microsoft puts the danger into perspective by stating that damage has occurred for less than 1 per 10,000 Xboxes sold. While that doesn’t sound like much, if you own an Xbox, the potential for fire from your cord is much better than your chance that of winning the lottery.
The recall affects Xboxes manufactured before Oct. 23, 2003. Since these cords pose a very real danger, if you own an Xbox you should take action. To check to see if your Xbox is affected and to order a replacement cord, see the Microsoft Xbox Replacement Cord Web site. While waiting for a new cord, Microsoft is advising players to turn off their Xbox consoles when not in use.
