Using Message Boards & Forums
objects/msgboards-postit.gifThose of us who have lived more than a few decades know that there is no substitute for knowledge and experience. Yet, no individual has extensive knowledge and/or experience in all the different aspects of life. That’s why sharing the experiences of others is such an empowering endeavor. Internet message boards were created to fill that particular role.

Message boards (sometimes called discussion, bulletin boards, or forums) are places on the Internet where people can go to ask questions, find answers, and share their own thoughts and proficiencies. These boards are generally geared toward a specific topic. For instance, right now Compu-KISS has several message boards. They each deal with a different topic. For instance, there is a board for Computer Help (PC Questions and Answers) and one for Mac Help. There is a board called Health & Wellness, one for Cell Phones, one on Photos & Printing, one on Games & Entertainment, and one where you can learn about freebees & Bargains.  We also have a board called Past, Present & Future where you can reminisce about the good old days, talk about today or look into the future.

The Compu-KISS boards are free and easy to use. You will find many other free message boards scattered throughout the Internet. All serve the same purpose, yet the look and format used in these boards can vary widely. One message board may look entirely different from another and hold different subjects of discussion. Yet, since they all have the same functionality, they are similar in how they work. In this article, I’ll be explaining how the Compu-KISS Message Boards work. Keep in mind that much of this information will be applicable to other message boards as well.

Navigating the Boards
Links to the Compu-KISS message boards can be found at the main Message Board page. Once at this page, just click on the title of the message board you are interested in. For example, for the Computer Help message board, click on Computer Help. For the Mac message board, click on Mac Help.

Messages that are put on the boards are called “posts”. To read the posts you simply click on the message board of your choice and scroll down the list of subjects. Remember that active message boards like those found on the Compu-KISS Web site may have many pages of topics to look at. Click on any topic and read the posts. Remember that each topic may have several pages of posts.

Posting a Message
You can read anything on the Compu-KISS message boards without registering, but In order to ask a question or post a comment you have to register. Just click on the word REGISTER on the horizontal bar under my picture. You will be presented with a form where youcan choose a user name and password. You have to fill in your email address, but don't worry, this will be kept private. You will also have to enter some letters and numbers that you see. This is called a Captcha and is used to keep spam from infiltrating the message boards. After you fill in your information click on "I Agree" at the bottom of the page and you will then be able to login with your username and password and join the discussions.

You can login from any page of the message board, just click on “login” from the horizontal bar under my picture and fill in your username and password. To post a new message, Click on "New Topic", which you will find on a smaller horizontal bar at the top of the message board.Fill in a subject for the discussion you wish to start, type your comments in the box, and click on “Post ”. Within minutes your post will appear on the board for others to see and comment on. If you want to add your comments to a discussion that is already underway, just navigate to that discussion, click on “Reply” and add your comments.

If you are starting a new discussion, it is important to give your first comment a meaningful subject line. Remember that whatever you type as the title is what others will see on the discussion list. Also be sure to follow the rules of the discussion board. On the Compu-KISS message boards we don't allow any foul language or blatant advertising.

I truly enjoy our Compu-KISS message boards! They are visited by some wonderful people and are filled with excellent information so be sure to visit  often. I am always looking for great suggestions on improving the boards with areas of interest to our visitors. Our visitors have now become a community where you can gather information and meet new friends. Visit often to love, laugh and learn!
