Surfing for Foreign Drugs Print E-mail
health/medicine.jpgPeople often ask me, “What do AARP members do on the Web?” Well, according to a new Hitwise survey, U.S. seniors are now using the Internet to purchase prescription drugs from Canada and Mexico. Hitwise states that “Among the top 25 pharmacy sites with the highest percentage of users age 55 and older, 12 are based in countries outside the US and emphasize their heavily discounted drug prices.”

In their quest for more affordable prescription drugs, seniors who live near the northern or southern borders of the U.S. have been known to travel across the borders to purchase their drugs. Now, however, the Internet has provided a tool for all seniors to be able to obtain foreign drugs no matter where they live.

Hitwise reports that those over 55 represent 37% of the entire category of pharmaceutical Web site visitors, and that this age bracket is more than twice as likely as all others to visit online pharmacy Web sites.

Although AARP Pharmacy Services holds the top position as the most visited pharmacy Web site for the over 55 crowd, three foreign sites are among the senior’s top twelve favorites. The three foreign sites with the highest percentage of senior activity are Canadian based Canada Drugs and Med Center Store, and DoctorSolve. Other popular sites include Mexican Pharmacies Online, MyRxForLess, and RxNorth.
