General Electric's EntryScan3 can detect trace levels of explosives substances on passengers. The technology will be used to screen passengers for explosives at security checkpoints in four airports in the United States: T.F. Green Airport, Warwick, RI; Greater Rochester International Airport, Rochester, NY; San Diego International Airport, San Diego, CA; and Tampa International Airport, Tampa, FL.

The trial is part of the TSA's efforts to use cutting edge technology in airport security. This pilot program comes on the heels of GE's success with TSA's Transit and Rail Inspection Pilot program at an Amtrak station in Maryland.

The passenger-screening machine is known as the "Puffer Machine," because it emits puffs of air to dislodge explosive particles. The Puffer has already been deployed at dozens of high-risk facilities worldwide to help detect explosives.
