| Pretty in Pink |

One of my favorite gaming devices, the handheld Nintendo DS now comes in pale pink. You may be completely unexcited by this fact, but it is, in fact, a breakthrough for women in technology.
I have been in the tech industry for over 30 years. I was the lone women in my IBM training classes in the seventies and one of the few women programmers at that time. With the introduction of the personal computer, men jumped into the fray, but most women stayed behind.
Now the women have finally caught up. They are using computers to help them run both their homes and businesses. They are talking on cell phones, listening to MP3 players, moving files with USB flash drives, and playing with high tech toys. This year for the first time, electronic manufacturers have acquiesced to the fact that women have entered the high tech world. The Motorola RAZR phone was the first flashy high tech device to come in pink. It was so popular that there are now two pink RAZR phones, one in pale pink, and one in a bright, almost shocking magenta. Now the coral pink Nintendo DS Lite gaming device follows suit. Apple recently announced a pink iPod Nano and others like Samsung also have also chosen pink for their handheld devices. Manufactures are realizing that catering to women can be profitable. Women control the purse strings for home purchases which are increasingly encompassing high tech devices. While manufacturers are catching on, consumer electronic stores are still in the dark ages. They are in the same place the auto industry was in 25 years ago when women became bold enough to go out and purchase a car without a male figure along. I am often outraged by the fact that women are portrayed as low-tech peons who have to ask their husband and children for tech advice. More and more women are becoming the go-to tech person in their homes and offices. In-store sales people need to wake up to the fact that women have become tech-savvy and don’t want treated as second class technology users by condescending clerks. Changing the way big electronic chains perceive the customer will probably take time. In the mean time, women are turning to online resources for their high tech purchases. Technology purchases are becoming second nature to today’s women as they become enamored of high tech devices. Diamonds used to be a girl’s best friend, but a recent survey by the Oxygen Network found that 77 percent of the women surveyed would opt for a new plasma television over a diamond solitaire necklace. The study also reported that 86 percent of the women would prefer a new digital video camera to a pair of designer shoes. Women have joined the computer revolution and are happily jumping on the technology bandwagon. We still like diamonds and designer shoes, but they have now taken their place right next to gaming devices, cell phones, and high definition televisions. The Sex in the City girls of television fame led the way for us. They wore $800 shoes but also carried gem-encrusted cell phones and used the latest laptop computers. Most of the women I know are making decisions about purchasing computers, digital cameras, and MP3 players for themselves and for their families, as well. We are intelligent. We are tech savvy.
