Yet another aggravating acronym to learn…. but it stands for an exciting new product. PMC is short for Portable Media Center. The Portable Media Center refers to a rash of new devices that will run on the new Windows Mobile software and the Windows Media format.
Newly designed products by Creative Labs, Samsung, IRiver and others will be reaching the store shelves in the next few months. They are expected to be very popular during the Christmas season. The PMC builds on the popularity of the portable DVD players by adding a hard drive to a pocket-sized device to store and play videos. Now you won’t have to drag along DVDs. The PMC will play virtually any pre-recorded video or audio that is downloaded from your computer. The Creative Labs, Zen Portable Media Center will be one of the first to reach the market. It will feature a 3.8-inch color screen, weigh 12 ounces and will cost around $500. The Zen’s 20-GB hard drive will be large enough to hold several complete movies, pre-recorded episodes of television shows, home videos, and digital still pictures. This next evolution of the portable MP3 player will be a new toy for the tech-savvy who want the latest and greatest, but it is poised to slowly become the portable player for everyone. Now that you know what PMC stands for you will not only be able to throw some new terminology into your next high-tech conversation, but you may even spend some time enjoying a new toy. |
