Internet attacks are increasingly targeting consumers online. According to Symantec's semi-annual Internet Security Threat Report, consumers are more at risk for Internet threats than ever before.
Art Wong, vice president of Symantec Security Response, says attackers are motivated by financial gain. Wong says, “Attackers are moving away from large, multipurpose attacks and towards smaller, more focused attacks. Phishing, a method of tricking consumers into revealing confidential information, increased by almost 90 percent in the last six months. Meanwhile, bot network activity increased by 100 percent. Bot networks are collections of computers controlled by an attacker to launch malicious activities.” Wong recommends that consumers and small businesses use an Internet security solution that combines antivirus, firewall, intrusion detection and vulnerability management. ”It's important for people to protect themselves by keeping patches up to date and using integrated Internet security solutions” says Wong.
