While identity fraud may seem to be out of control, a new report shows this is not the case. The Javelin Strategy & Research report shows that in terms of victims, ID fraud has not increased. In fact, for the third year, fewer Americans were impacted by identity fraud.
James Van Dyke of Javelin says “Fraud incidents have declined, and consumers are not helpless to protect themselves. Internet use does not increase risk – it’s actually the fastest way to catch a thief. The highest amounts of fraud continue to be committed by friends, neighbors and relatives.” Vam Dyke ads, “Shredding documents is only part of the solution. The most important thing you can do is take paper, checkbooks, wallets, and purses out of the equation. By monitoring your accounts online, and securely receiving electronic bills and statements, you can minimize access and more quickly detect fraud attempts.”
