HP Recalls Flaming Cameras Print E-mail
Written by Sandy Berger
gascamIf you or anyone you know owns a HP Photosmart R707 digital camera, you need to be aware of a potentially dangerous situation.

When the camera is contains a non-rechargeable battery, such as a Duracell CP-1, and is put in the docking station or connected to the ac adapter, the battery may overheat causing the camera to burst into flames.

HP has sold 679,000 Photosmart R707’s around the world with approximately 224,000 sold in the United States. Although only one fire was reported, HP has issued a safety recall.

Since the firmware (software in the camera itself) which tries to charge a non-rechargeable battery is the cause of the problem, the fix is an easy one. Just surf over to the HP Recall Site and download new firmware for the camera. The updated software can also be obtained on CD. HP also has a toll free U. S. phone number for questions and CD requests. Call 1-866-304-7117 from  6AM - 6PM MST, Monday through Friday. The HP recall site also has a list of informative frequently asked questions regarding the problem and its solution.
