How to Install a New Antivirus Program Print E-mail

computer-lock.jpgIf you are using Norton, McAfee or any other paid antivirus, you can easily switch to a free program and keep a little more green in your pocket. There are several good free antivirus programs. Amoung them are AVG and Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials. But you should never run two antivirus programs at the same time. Follow these instructions to remove the old one before you install the new one.

To correctly uninstall your old antivirus program and install a new one, you will want to:

• Download or purchase a boxed version of the new program.
• Go offline. You can do this by unplugging your modem.
• Uninstall the old program by going to the Control Panel and choosing to uninstall it from the list of installed programs using the Add/Remove Program option in Windows XP or the Programs and Features option in Windows Vista and Windows 7. (Click on Start and choose Control Panel. Then make sure that the Control Panel is in Classic Mode in Windows XP or Vista and in the "icon" mode in Windows 7).
• Install the new antivirus program.
• Go back online.
