Hospital Bedside Computers E-mail
health/doctorcomputer80.jpgWhen you're in a hospital, the last thing you want is to be given the wrong medication or treatment. But that is a problem faced by hospitals because of illegible handwritten prescriptions. Now, new technology is helping hospitals reduce medication errors as well as expedite treatment orders and improve patient care.

New bedside computer systems are being used in hospitals nationwide that allow doctors to input information more clearly and provide them all the information about a patient right at their fingertips. Hospitals note that the system is reducing errors significantly. For instance, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center says the system has reduced its medical errors by 35 percent. The system also keeps track of a patient's medical history - so if a doctor prescribes the wrong medication, the system will alert the doctor immediately.

The system also makes patient care more efficient. With the new computer system, doctors can order new tests, medications, nursing orders and anything else the patient may need through the bedside computer. Cincinnati Children's Hospital says that the system has helped speed up medication turn around time by as much as 52 percent.

The system has improved care so significantly that some states are considering making its implementation mandatory.
