Detecting Cancer Before Symptoms Appear Print E-mail
health/doctor.jpgAccording to the American Cancer Society, one in every two men and one in every three women will get cancer in their lifetime. However, emerging technologies could soon help doctors detect cancer before symptoms appear - a stage at which patients can be treated and cured.

Molecular imaging detects changes in the body at the cellular level, allowing researchers to see even the tiniest abnormities that have historically gone undetected until a cancer reached a more advanced, harder to treat stage. Current technology only detects cancer once a tumor or lesion has formed. Experts say that cancers that are detected early on are all virtually curable.

Much of molecular imaging is still confined to labs, but industry insiders say it's only a matter of time before Americans begin reaping the benefits. And the technology won't just help cancer patients - researchers are looking to use molecular imaging for early detection of Alzheimer's disease, diabetes and other life threatening conditions.

Siemens, has even formed a new division called Siemens Medical Solutions Molecular Imaging to combine nuclear medicine operations with  CTI Molecular Imaging, Inc. More information can be found in Siemens Press Release.
