Cyber Angel Refurbishes Old Computers Print E-mail
computer/computerintrash.jpgDon’t use your old computer as a doorstop. Don’t let it clutter your basement or garage. Old computers and monitors contain toxic chemicals that can seep into the soil, so whatever you do, don’t put it in the garbage. Instead, put it to good use.

If your computer is in good working condition you may be able to donate it to a local school, church, or charity. Or perhaps you are lucky enough to have a computer angel in your community.

Here in Moore County we have such an angel. His name is Jules Skalski. Jules is one of our new age “zoomers”. He zoomed into retirement (from AT&T International Engineering), but found himself unwilling to spend his time in a rocking chair. As a member of the Southern Pines Knights of Columbus, Jules garnered particular concern for the Moore County Special Education classes, that the Knights support with their tootsie-roll candy drive every October. Jules also likes working with computers. As a member of the 7-Lakes Computer Club, Jules started taking in old computers. He repaired, renovated, and updated these old computers in his garage. Then he donated them to some of the Moore County Special Ed classrooms that he knew about from his work with the Knights of Columbus.

Word spread quickly, and before long, Jules was receiving computers from total strangers. He renovates each of these, often taking parts from one to be used in another. If necessary, he upgrades the operating system and adds more memory. Jules not only donates his time and energy, but he himself funds the additional memory and necessary repair parts. In the last year, Jules has donated 35 computers to Moore County schools. He has also donated several to local Assisted Living Centers. Jules is ably assisted by a fellow 7-Lakes Computer Club member, Don Shereda. They coined a name for their effort, “Komputers for Kids”.

If you would like to donate a computer for this great cause you can contact Jules by e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . He will accept any PC no matter how old (no Macs, please). He can use any make or model whether working or not. He also accepts monitors, printers, and scanners. Right now, he is in need of monitors, so if you just upgraded to one of those new flat panel monitors, consider giving Jules your chunky old one. He will be thrilled to get it. Oh, and did I mention? If you can’t get the computer to him, he will even pick it up.

My special thanks to Mr. Skalski and Mr. Shereda for their special “computer angel” work. Please support them with donations of your old computer equipment.

How do you find an angel if you don’t live in Moore County? Visit your local computer user clubs. They love to have guests. Talk to the local computer stores, or talk to others who are interested in computers. Perhaps you will be lucky enough to find such an angel in your community.
