The National Federation of the Blind unveiled the world's first handheld electronic reader. The Kurzweil - National Federation of the Blind Reader was developed in partnership by the NFB and renowned inventor Ray Kurzweil. The National Federation of the Blind's James Gashel says the device is revolutionary.
“In the device”, he says, “we have is the world's first talking camera. Just point it at something with printed text and it begins to read the text back in synthetic speech within seconds.”
Gashel says it opens up a new world for the visually impaired, a population expected to double over the next 30 years as baby boomers age. “People who can't see or read very well can now read business cards, medical reports, menus, bills, and programs at live events, independently and privately. It's a whole new world of freedom.”
